Image of a lightbulb in a dark room. You are the Light of the World

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.  Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

(Mt 5:14-16)

In the Called Beyond week, everybody is invited to go "Beyond the Call of Duty", but what does that mean? We mean that we respond to the invitation of Jesus to do good works so that people might learn from our example, so as to give Glory to God and to build the kingdom of God here on earth, as it is in heaven. We invite you to do something more than the basic Christian good living, and then share your good works with your brothers and sisters in your parish, either at some specific point in the Called Beyond week, or through social media.

What might these "works" be?

You may decide to do anything good. You may wish to be inspired by the tradition of the Church - from the Corporal Works of Mercy, or the Spiritual Works of Mercy. So for example some people might like to give clothing to a charity shop, or help out at a food bank, or simply be friendly to somebody selling the Big Issue. Other options might be to pray for somebody, or forgive a person who has offended you. All of these are not only doing good, but changing the world just a little - God's will is being done.
